Hello, I'm new here. I don't know if it's a correct place to ask but I run into a big trouble while cleaning my pc. I accidentally shorted my PC HARD DISK. It accidentally touched a metal surface and burned a capacitor on the logic board, [strike]and now its five-volt rail is shorted[/strike]. BIOS is no more detecting the hard disk and it's not spinning any more.
What Should I do to fix it?

Yeah, that disk is gone. If you can source the exact board for that particular HDD, which I doubt you will, you could get it back up and running. I'm curious though, what did you use to clean your system and what was it that contacted the surface mounted capacitor on that HDD?

Is not it possible to fix by replacing the shorted capacitor?

only the capacitor was burned.

Go here and see if they can help you. Seen this type of question several times. Best of luck.

I have never repaired any computer hard drive before. I have experience with soldering but never done it on a Hard Disk before. I am worried about the soldering temperature, solder type and the flux type that should be used in this case. Also, there is no hard drive repairing service in my city. I have very few options of either fixing this board or buying a new logic board from eBay. I located an exact board from eBay but that would cost me around $65. It will be my last option if I failed in fixing the board. I checked the board for any short circuit near the OA56511 IC ( may be a voltage regulator) and the only thing shorted is that the burned capacitor. I think there may be two possible damages either the IC OA56511 itself or both the IC & CAP, I may be wrong on this(I am not a computer professional). Also, I checked the 12v and the 5v supply and they are not shorted.
It will be very helpful if someone can provide any information and guidance on troubleshooting and fixing the logic board.
Thank you, everyone, for your reply.
