Looking to upgrade

I have an Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 motherboard and an AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8 core processor. I am looking to upgrade my graphics card but am not sure the best way to check for compatibility and to ensure that my current hardware is able to actually use the full potential of whatever new card I buy. Any help is appreciated!!

The FX-8350 has some limitations in new games with modern GPUs. Not completely, but limitations are there. To actually use a GPU to it's full potential you'd be limited to something like a GTX 1050 Ti. You might consider a major system upgrade along with a more powerful GPU.

*Update: See a comparison of your FX-8350 and a Ryzen 5 2600 -> https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-2600-vs-AMD-FX-8350/3955vs1489

Slightly more expensive but the 1060 is a better card imo.
