I have an MSI b350 tomahawk motherboard with 8gb of ram 2 x 4. I want to upgrade to 12gb by purchasing 1 stick of 4gb ram. Can I pull this off? Thanks

You can. However ram does not like being mixed and being in an odd config does not help. Even if you get the exact same stick unless they were all togheter in a kit there is alaways a decent chance it won't work.
Another bigger problem is that you'll go to single channel speeds which has a drastic performance drop with ryzen so this upgrade whilst helping in some area's will negatively affect you in many others.
