I am running ubuntu server on a late 2012 mac mini and i the on board ethernet port is rated for 1gig. My router is a CGNM-2250 from shaw which is also rated for gigabit. I am running windows 10 on my main pc and when i transwer from the NAS which is setup using samba i only receive 64mbytes max. The NAS and my win 10 pc are both connected to a dlink 10/100/1000 switch. Both cables going to the nas and pc are cat 5e and the cable going to my router is a cat 6 cable. as far as i know i dont need to do anything else to get the speed i am expecting.

It could be a limitation of the NAS or the drives you are reading from or writing to, have you looked to see if there is any data available about real world speeds? My NAS manages about 111MB/s download speed but that's with 2 disks in RAID 0 to help with transfer speeds. With a single disk it drops a bit.

My results are about what you'd expect, 125MB/s is the theoretical maximum of gigabit ethernet but you are unlikely to see that in the real world and 111 is actually very good. I'm assuming you are aware of the difference between bits and bytes with these numbers?

I am aware of the difference between bits and bytes. 1gig is 125 mbyts. i have tests pc to pc both running windows 10 on ethernet and on both computers i average about 111mbytes but when i go from a different pc to my nas on the same network i get the same speeds as my pc. im not sure if ram would play a factor in this or not but having a mac mini from 2012 i would imagine 2 gigs is not enough. The drive is a single drive running at 5400rpm. when i did my test from pc to pc i just shared a folder and found it on the other pc. thats how i got my 111mbytes transfer. that drive is was going off of was a 5400 drive that i use as back up.
