Currently planning out for my first PC build and I'm having trouble looking for a definitive answer online.

I'm on a tight budget at the moment and I can only really afford either 1x8GB or 2x4GB. In this scenario most would say go with dual channel. But my problem is when I want to upgrade in the future(not soon) to 16GB. I'm thinking of getting 2x4GB first then getting another 2 sticks of 4GB for quad-channel 16GB. But I'm wondering if performance wise it would be better to get 1x8GB first and then getting another stick of 8GB in the future(again, probably not soon). I want to know if 2x8GB is better or worse than 4x4GB, or if it even makes a difference at all.

That's what I thought, thanks for confirming. Definitely going to get the 2x4GB now then upgrade to 4x4GB in the future.

Does the motherboard have 4 ram slots? Are you using the onboard GPU? Then you want to be dual channel ddr4 3000+ and you would still be dual channel with 4 sticks later on.

There may be an issue with finding a matching set or getting 4 sticks to run at high clocks, but every agesa update seems to improve memory issues. For my 2200G I did have to use 2933 or 3066 due to memory dividers , but a bios update recently and now it can run my 3000 ram at rated speed no problem.
