Hey guys! I pretty much summarized my main question in the title. I currently have a gtx 1080, an i7 4790 and 12gb of ddr3 ram on my pc, and i'm about to purchase myself a 1440p 144hz monitor. I was just hoping to get some feedback and advice from you guys as to what kind of performance I can expect (for gaming on newer AAA titles) as my main focus, and moving forward, what parts should i be getting to maximize my performance. Thanks very much for the help guys!

Solution
Should be fine.
Problem - with 12GB of ram you're most likely loosing dual channel memory operation (if it is any other combination than 4+4+2+2 GB).
16GB (8+8 GB) would be better.

1080 + i7 4790 will do for 1440p gaming. You may want to upgrade your ram to 2 or 4 same capacity/speed modules to make it dual-channel mode. I think 12GB is operating in single channel mode only, unless there exists 6gb or 3gb rams.
