I am installing CPU and cooler for the first time, according to guides. Mobo is MSI Z77-G43, CPu is Intel Core i5 3570K and cooler is SilentiumPC Spartan 3 Pro HE1024 with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 12,5W/mk. I thought that would be good enough. I tried to do everything properly. I did not overclock it yet.

When I run stress test, my temperature goes instantly (!) to 100 degrees Celsius. No overclocking. Heatsink is cold. When I stop stress test, my CPU goes back to 30 degrees Celsius in 2-3 seconds. What the heck? I thought if I put thermal paste improperly or if I did something wrong, it would eventually overheat but this is one second until it reaches 100 degrees Celsuis! Like it did not have any heatsink and cooler at all or what.

well the maximum power the chip pulls is 118W
118W x 1.5 = 177W
so you need a heatsink rated at 177W or higher. That is why its doing what its doing under high load with your 150W heatsink .

If it had no heatsink, it'd reach 250°C+ in a second.

Couple of things. First is that you are using stock voltages. These are set by Intel. Figure on every cpu being different, they all are based on different batches of silicon, with slightly different impurities etc. So each individual cpu requires the possibility of different voltages. Some might be happy at 1.08v but others might not be happy unless at 1.216v. So stock voltages are intentionally set way high, 1.25v+ to accommodate every possible cpu and still remain guaranteed stable. It's quite often the lack of OC that can cause issues when a stock system is pushed hard. My 3570k sits quite happily at 4.3GHz OC with 1.08v. Stock had it running at 3.4GHz (3.8GHz turbo) at 1.23v. Stressed OC is 70°C and stressed stock hits 98°C.

So don't assume there's a hardware issue, you look to have taken necessary precautions there, but you can most definitely lower temps by actually overclocking the cpu while undervolting the needs.

Take vcore off auto, manually set for 1.25v. Run stress for 5 minutes. Drop vcore to 1.23v... Rinse and repeat

Stability testing: Asus RealBench
Temp testing: Prime95 v26.6
Monitor : Hwmonitor, speccy, realtemp, coretemp all are good for those cpus.

Wait, what? TDP of i5 3570K is 77W, many people use it with intel box heatsink and cooler. And my heatsink is not even warm!

My stock voltage was under 1.2V (1.17 I think, or less, under load). Also if it helps, idle temps are bellow 40 degrees Celsuis. Please just tell me that I did not bend any pins :(

Warning about TDP. It's not what ya think. TDP is Thermal Design Power. It's the amount of power used by the cpu under a specific set of applications. And those apps are pretty mediocre. It is not even close to maximum peak power, which averages 2x TDP in an i5 and even more in an i7 with hyperthreading. This is why a 140w cooler like a hyper212 does good, it'll handle the full load of power capable in an i5 under stock values and still stay under thermal throttle temps. An i5-3570k with OC can approach 200w, an i7-3770K with OC can get closer to 250w. TDP not withstanding. TDP is also used as a general assumption of energy in the form of heat output from a cpu as it pretty much follows an equitable power used. But can be off by as much as 10w± either direction, most being closer to 5w± which is considered close enough.

You stick an 80w cooler on a 77w TDP cpu and you'll stay inside throttle temps under average usage. Extreme usage such as stress testing or full on 100% cpu usage gaming and that 80w cooler won't be even close to being able to keep the cpu under 100°C.

But shouldn't be the heatsink at least warm, if CPU is 100 degrees Celsius? Until yesterday, I was using i5 2500 and box cooler. 2500 has higher TDP and intek stock box cooler is far worse than my current solution. It never exceeded 72 degrees celsius under 100% stress load.

with the cooler make sure it on tight. if it not on tight and there an air gap it wont cool right. try another brand of thermal paste clean the chip off and repaste it see if the temps are better. if it under 30 days return the unit for higher h7 cooler or one with bigger heat sinks.

TDP is an average load rating, and not a maximum power dissipation rating. Usually TDP is not exceeded unless there is unusually high processor activity, or power virus activity. Anything that increases duty cycle or peak power demands. Bitcoin mining, compiling c++ code, extreme floating point math applications would be some examples.

The formula for finding the proper heatsink for all electronic devices regardless if it is a transistor or an integrated circuit chip is 1 1/2 times its maximum power draw. This is a standard that was established.

edit: so it is normal with that heatsink to have some heat dissipation hysteresis since its based off the average design center. Now if it was building up, then the case cooling would have to be looked at. If you don't want to see that, you would get a heatsink sized for all operating conditions.

Btw the Intel spies should have looked at this by now and posted something about this in a more detailed and complex way, explaining how they did such, and such, and so forth. But to keep it simple, you treat it like any other electronic component and use standard practices.

This topic has gotten so derailed now talking about TDP, so to get back to the original topic at hand, chnapo, I need 2 pieces of information to help.

1) What are you using to monitor temperature? Is it an LCD built into your keyboard or is it a program like RealTemp or OCCT? If it's an LCD on your keyboard, ensure that it is setup correctly and that you have the latest drivers for your keyboard. You may be getting false readings. If it is a program like RealTemp or OCCT, then that's good and they are far more accurate.

2) What are you using to stress test? I'm going to guess you are using the latest version of Prime95. If that is the case, that version uses AVX instruction sets (which the 3570 supports), which causes HUGE amounts of heat and puts a nearly impossible load on your CPU, a load you would never see again anywhere else. That would cause temps to spike to 100C almost instantly on all but the best of coolers (and even then temps are high). If this is the case, that you are on the latest version of Prime95, download version 26.6 instead. That was the last version to not use AVX. If temps under 26.6 are 85C or lower then you can expect real world temps at or below 80C under real world heavy loads. And in gaming you can expect somewhere in the 50s or 60s most of the time.

Thank you that you don't only speak about TDP. For the first question, I monitor temperature via MSI Afterburner. Secnd, I am using HeavyLoad v3.4 which brings all cores to 100% load.

For all TDP-ers. I understand that stress test can put insane load on my CPU but I still don't understand how the cooler does not handle it. I used the same test on i5 2500 with 95W TDP with stock rubbish intel box cooler and it managed to stay under 72 degrees Celsius - after 10 minutes of 100% load on all cores using the same program and it keeps 72C for another 10 minutes. Now I put in 3570K which has TDP of 77W and massive cooler (compared to box cooler) and without any OC (running 3.8GHZ turbo) it just JUMPS to 100 degrees. I tried to lock voltage to 1.12V because I read that mobos can increase voltage and that increases temperature massively (in auto mode it was 1.18V). The CPU did not exceed its turbo frequency (which also 2500 did).

Sandy Bridge (i5 2500) has soldered IHS while Ivy Bridge (i5 3570K) has TIM which is a crap heat transfer material (at least the Intel one). That is why recently people started delidding CPUs.

EDIT: Basically the heat is trapped inside the cpu without being transfered to the cooler efficiently.

Ah, yes, Heavy Load also uses the AVX instruction set. That's why the temps spike immediately like that. Even an $1,100 industrial cooler can only keep Temps to 87C on the 8700K. If you're wondering why this didn't happen on your 2500, it's because that processor didn't support AVX, so when you used Heavy Load on it, it defaulted to SSE instead.

I'd say try using Prime95 26.6 and run the blend torture test. If temps look good there you're good to go!

https://ark.intel.com/products/52209/Intel-Core-i5-2500-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3-70-GHz- According to this, 2500 supports AVX, but I will run the tests to be sure. Prime 95 26.6 blend torture test. I will post results here as soon as I manage to run tests. Thank you!

So update - I ran different tests including Prime95 26.6 and all result in temperature skyrocketing up to 100+ degrees where CPU starts throttling. I used also different (stock box) cooler to ensure that my cooler is not bad, but it made no difference. I let my brother handle the installation to ensure that it is installed properly, and also no difference. In all cases, the heatsink is at room temperature.

Also one more update, seller claims that he pulled it out of working PC, and under load it was 54 degrees Celsius. He did not test it after pulling out. So assuming that he is telling truth, the only possible damage could happen to the CPU was when the CPU was stored, shipped or installed (by me). Can any of this relate to the temperature spikes? Note that it wasn't shipped in anti-static package, only in plastic bag and bubble foil protection around it. I was very gentle when installing it.

EDIT: After examining it again, it looks like lid is turned 180 degrees (when it is in correct direction and the arrow is in the bottom left corner, text on lid is upside down). Around the lid, there are some grey stains but very tiny and just around the lid, like glue that fixes lid on the CPU or what.

Why would someone take the cpu heatspreader lid off a newer CPU? Is the TIM pad that badly designed on them?

The glue should be black, so either its jb weld or left over conductive grease.

2 reasons why ppl delid. First is to fix large gap temps between cores. All cores being equal, they should be just a few degrees in temp different, but sometimes you'll see as much as a 20°C difference between high and low. Normally not an issue with a locked cpu, but can be bad for OC levels as it can get larger with higher voltages.

The second reason is fraud. Ppl will take older, cheaper cpus that still boot and swap the lids with dead cpus that have good selling prices and are dead. Like swapping a i5-3400 lid with a i5-3570k. It'll boot just fine, but you'd not notice unless you paid attention during boot or went to OC, and by that time the seller is long gone with your money.

If that cpu has been delidded, and was done half ashed, it would explain high temps.

Nope. When the arrow points down, like on the pic, writing is upside down.
