High bufferbloat, do I need new modem or router?

Modems, routers, switches, combinations of these. My head is going to explode.

Currently I have some old device TW-EAV510 v2 that is attached to a copper telephone line. PCs are attached to it. It has Wi-Fi too. So basically, a modem/router combo if I understood right. The problem is that I get over 2000ms bufferbloat and gaming is horrible. It has the latest firmware.

I have read some bufferbloat articles that talk about SQM and wrt and whatever but it doesn't seem those have anything to do with my modem/router.

At first, I looked at Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR500. However, it doesn't seem to have a modem. It probably won't help me if I attach a decent router to a shit modem?

So I would need NETGEAR AC1900 WiFi Nighthawk D7800 (D7000) VDSL/ADSL Modem Router. What would even be the point of XR500 if the this one has both modem and router?

Most lines from the ISP coming in need a modem. I like having a stand alone modem so it's not tied to other equipment. You will need a router for NAT, you can nest two if needed to use features from both.

The differences between most of the consumer models comes down to wifi mostly. I'm not sure if any of those can run SQM. ddwrt, openwrt, ipfire, and the edge router X all have SQM (fq_codel+htb). You might be able to flash something to ddwrt if you have it. The edge router X is only $50 and it supports up to 100Mbs. You can use a Unifi AP Lite or LR for wifi.

I'm just wondering that do I need a new modem or can I just set LAN port 1 to bridge mode and then attach Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR500 router to that and then my PCs into XR500. Do you think that will fix bufferbloat? Because online games are unplayable.

The modem provides an extremely basic function. If you rent you also get customer support. As long as it's fast enough it's a non-issue. Keep the current one and nest a new LAN below it to get SQM. All devices on wifi and cable need to go through the new router if you nest them.

If you are trying to run QoS for bufferbloat only the fq_codel+htb will help. I don't think the XR500 has it I already suggest a few that do.
