Okay awesome i appreciate the help and ive ordered 8gb ddr3 ram
How much would a cpu upgrade cost do you think??

alright, below is a list of Approximatively the parts you have in your system (base on your descriptions) ignore the brand names not relevant.

CPU: Intel - Core i3-550 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus - Maximus III Gene Micro ATX LGA1156 Motherboard
Memory: 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory
Storage: 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Video Card

now , this is a dead end system... but there are things you can do to make it last a little longer.

1. change the cpu on it for an I7-860 on eBay can be found easily for about 50$, i7-870 for 75$ and i7-880 can be found to 80$
(important note, to upgrade top some of theses cpus you need to do a firmware upgrade prior to upgrading to the new cpu as indicated on the web site : https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_III_GENE/HelpDesk_CPU/ )

2. upgrade your ram to at least bring it to 8GB, sell your 4Gb on eBay and get this ram that will be faster than what you have :
(https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= )

Lastly if you have spare change you could move the Os to a 120GB ssd to speed up things but nominal improvements will be seen.
as for upgrading video card that is a toss up considering the system you have.

So basically what your saying is none of my equipment is any good?

So basically what your saying is none of my equipment is any good?

no I said it was a dead end, i.e. upgrades will end up costing more than buying a new cpu/motherboard/ram in the end... to get something that is 313.65% faster

i.e. Your I3/motherboard 4gb of ram spending 150$ on it, IMHO is wasting money, but is a possibility to get it going for now (as explained above)
you could get a i5-8400/motherboard/ram for 3-400$ and instead of a dual core or quad core 1st gen cpu you would have a 6 core 8th gen cpu, motherboard and DDR4 ram …

But... spending 100-150$ to get it going to do an upgrade in a year or two is a viable solution and why I suggested what I did.

As informational PassMark scores below your current i3-550 the upgrade possible to the I7-880 versus the I5-8400 as follow.

as you see the difference only based on a cpu is Massive. and not taking in consideration that current 8th gen motherboard can handle at least 2x times more pathways on the main bus and process information twice as fast on top of it.

does it make sense to spend 150$ for a couple of year to perform a proper upgrade.. yes
does it make sense to upgrade the old system IF (and this is your pocket not mine) you have the money or rather wait to not waste any monies.

I would choose the second option.

I am not telling you to upgrade to a necessarily newer CPU. The used market is the way to go. You can easily find good used quad core processors under $100 as a weak 2 core cpu would bottleneck your GPU. Good day
