Overclock Kaby Lake (7700k) on Asus Maximus VIII Hero Problems

First time poster here, so hello :)

I recently picked up a 7700k from a friend of mine, flashed the bios to the latest release 38xx, threw in (very gently) the 7700k. OS booted perfectly and recognised the cpu, idle temps ~30c and on load didn’t go past 70. Great, time to overclock.

This is where I ran into problems, what ever I set the ratio at e.g 47 on all cores, boot is a bit weird it will show the loading screen for a sec, pay will make a click sound, the screen will flash off for a split second when it click and then will show the loading screen again and boot normally.

The freq won’t go past 4400 and single core of 4500. CPU-z shows 44x (8-47). Things I’ve tried:

- Older 3401 bios
- performance and balanced plans
- cleared cmos and reconfigured
- uninstalled AI Suite 3 and AI Cleaned
- used configurations other users have used with a 7700k and z170
- clear cmos and only change ratio
- disabled all power saving in UEFI

I’m running out of ideas, only thing I can think of is some conflicting software on th system, or the board, but others have had success with Kaby Lake. Is there a way I can check it isn’t software related before I reinstall windows?

I was running a 6600k at 4.4 before upgrading.

System:
I7 7700k
Asus Maximus VIII hero
2x8gb 2400 ram
2x 2.5” 256gb SSD RAID 0
Aorus 1080ti Extreme WB
ek x360 custom loop
650w 80 gold PSU
Windows 10 Pro

Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks!

I’m hoping it is, I’ve played around with a lot of settings nothing seems to work, with the 6600k I could just adjust the ratio with everything set to auto straight from default settings and got a successful overclock.

I really don’t want to fork out more money on a z270 board, I must be missing a setting in the bios that affects the Kaby Lake.

Ok I’ll give that a go when I get home, however I don’t think it will change anything as I run cinebench whenever I change settings and it gives me the same score

There is the gamers oc which I also tried, sets it at 4.8 and changed a few things, I only changed the ram freq to 2400 (from 2666), however same issue - boots fine it just shows x44 (8 - 48) and pretty much the same cinebench score

I just did a fresh install of windows 10 or a brand new m2 drive, same issues, however it now seems like all the cores are locked together, because I saw them hit 4500Mhz together
