Is my GPU the cause?

Computer only hard freezes when playing PUBG. Witcher 3, GTA V doesn't even freeze after hours of playing. Is my GPU undervolted/overvolted?

Things I've done:

-Clean OS install

-Updated drivers

-Ran memtest86

-Changed HDMI cable from GPU to MB and hard freeze occurred without the black screen.

-Changed game location to other hard drive/SSD

-Fresh install of Steam and PUBG

OS: Windows 10

MOBO: Gigabyte B85m HD3 previously (Asus Z97 Deluxe)

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k

GPU: Sapphire R9 390x Tri-x OC 8gb

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X series Dual 16gb 1866

HDD:
1 x 128gb Samsung 840 Evo
1 x 2tb WD Caviar Black
1 x 3tb WD Caviar Green

Liquid cooling: Swiftech H240x

PSU: XFX Pro series 1250w 80 plus gold

That means that your GPU is certainly not to blame, if the game also hangs with integrated GPU.

My guess is that this buggy game called PUBG is unstable and very dependant on your CPU frequency/voltage. In particular, if you are overclocking (and I suppose you do, since you have 4790K) try to either reduce overclock slightly or increase CPU voltage slightly. It should help.

I'm having a hard time reading it. I'll try and understand it a bit further but I saw errors.

I didn't remove the video card just changed the HDMI cable. To be honest I don't know how to overclock since I don't have any plans in doing so.

If you unplugged HDMI cable from your main GPU and plugged it into your mobo, that means that you immediately started to use integrated GPU instead of the main (discrete) one. The game hanged anyway, so your main GPU is not the culprit if it also hangs with integrated one. You don't have to remove the main GPU to use integrated one, connecting the card with the monitor is enough to switch output to a different device.

As for the OC, if you are not doing it, than I'd have to chalk it up to this one specific buggy game (PUBG). If there were a problem with your rig, ANY kind of hardware problem, most of the games would hang or crash. But you only have issues with PUBG. Hard to diagnose for sure, but your rig is not to blame, it is the game that is causing it. Maybe future patches will solve it, and maybe something can be done by tinkering with settings and/or config files, but you will probably have to consult game support forums for specific details.

Maybe the game really is the problem. Read a lot of forums with the same problem as me and they have stronger and newer rigs than me. Only PUBG crashes. Maybe it's best to stay away from the game for a while. But I'll try and diagnose it some more without touching anything. Thank you.

Unfortunately the hard freeze happened again with Witcher 3 after leaving it on while browsing the web and also happened with 3DMark Firestrike. Couldn't even finish the benchmark.

If that's the case, you don't have much options except testing each component separately in a different rig, or using a different component in your own just to test.

Try using a single stick of memory only for starters. If it happens again, use just the other stick solo.

Check your maximum CPU and GPU temps reached while playing/benching and report them back.

Check your BIOS for any overclocks on CPU and/or memory. Remove all overclocking just for test.

Reset the BIOS to defaults and CPU and GPU temp doesn't go past 70 when gaming. I think my rig hard freeze/crashes on heavy load. I benchmarked it with Unigine and 3DMark. Less than an hour fail on Unigine and 2 unfinished benchmark on 3DMark Firestrike. Could it really be the GPU?
