I built a second gaming PC (spec below) a few months back for my gf and friends, so I just stuck in a AMD 7870 GPU 2GB I had to save costs when building it all.

The GPU performs pretty well tbf on most games and even gets a good 45-50FPS on PUBG but it seems to get frame drops occasionally and when moving around in PUBG its not as smooth as it can be - its easily playable but feel with a better GPU will be a lot nicer to play. So I have 2 questions:

1) Nvidia 970 or AMD RX 480 for PUBG?

2) I was looking at 4GB but will 8GB be a big improvement for my issues (framdrops & smoothness when looking around)?

Spec:
Intel Core i5 8400 2.8GHz(6 core)
8GB RAM DDR4 2400
256GB SSD
AMD 7870 2GB (Currently)

To OP - go for the 8GB vram card, because you have 8GB ram which is borderline for games in 2018 2019+. 4GB vram isn't enough for some games today, and these games will try to use more ram to compensate, so you will probably get choppy experience with 8GB ram + 4GB vram (in your case 3.5+0.5). With a potent CPU like you got and a good graphics card, recommended memory combinations are 16GB ram + 4(or 8)GB vram or 8GB ram + 8GB vram. you have 8GB ram so I recommend the RX 480 8GB (similar performance to the GTX 970).
