Can I have a modem plugged into a router plugged into a modem?

In my household, I'm the only person who trulely relies on the internet speed. Our current modem has a finicky puma 6 chipset which is known for having shaky connections for video streaming and gaming. So I was gonna buy a modem which I will plug my own router into then plug the other modem (which is a router modem combo) into my router... would there be 2 different connections that work well? or will the modem/router combo not get a connection?

No, that wouldn't work. If your modem is crap, either try to get your ISP to replace it (if it's provided by them) or replace it yourself. If it's a modem/router combo, you could try putting it into bridge mode and then connecting your router to it, if you want your own router to be the router for the network rather than the modem/router's built in one.

everyone in our house would have to pay 15 dollars extra on top of our rent and I honestly didnt want to do that. And they dont actually even care for internet speed, they just watch youtube and need internet to do homework. There would be no connection at all for the router/modem combo? If not I'll just replace it entirely...

Look on the Recommended list from your ISP for a modem.
Buy one.
Replace the one you have.
Done.

Also:

Have you actually experienced this, or just something you read?

It sounds like you already have your own router and already plan to get a new modem. I don't understand, where is that extra $15 coming from?

No, there is no way for you to use your own modem and the rest of the house use a different modem, short of possibly getting a 2nd internet service.
