Windows 10 now on Samsung 860 EVO 256gb; should I change to Samsung 970 Pro 500 go?

Hi,

I just finished a major storage upgrade. Optane to 32gb, added Samsung 970 Pro 500 gb on a daughter card, and added a WD Blue 1tb sata3. This is in addition to a WD Black 2tb for games/data, and my first SSD a Samsung 860 EVO 256 gb, which is my windows 10 64-bit boot drive.

Seeing that I have the new 970 Pro that’s about 7x the speed of my boot 860 SATA, would it be wise or necessary to put windows on the 970 Pro for quicker (I’m assuming so) access to system filed or leave it on the 860 EVO SATA?

I’ve never had a glut of drives like this before

Solution

Right.
Personally, I would leave the OS where it is on the 860. Pro or otherwise.

Use the new 970 for other things.

Many people here who have done that change report the difference as underwhelming.
Yes, the NVMe is "faster". But at this point, we're talking about "faster than already really really fast".

And that "faster" is really only in large sequential file access. Small 4k files, like what you do with the OS....they're not really that much 'faster'.

What do you use the system for?

You already have the 970 so its not a question of whether to buy but how to use. I would submit that it is indeed wise (lol) to put the OS on the 970. What better thing to do with the fastest drive in the world than use it as much as possible ? Keeping it as storage is a complete waste IMHO.

The speed difference over the 860 is often noticeable, contrary opinions notwithstanding, and will be appreciated even though some are left underwhelmed or see no difference at all. Any task taking longer than 5 seconds will benefit and you will undoubtedly brag about your incredible boot times.

I concede its an expensive speed demon . But since you threw the money at the drive already do not miss enjoying it .

Mostly gaming, but some Office stuff too. I put in a Gigabyte GTX 1080 Gamer card and 32 gb for the games.

I should add one thing that I might have not made clear (late night again) is that the 860 Pro is a SATA III drive (I even said EVO in my op). I’m sorry if I confused anyone.

To be clear, Win 10 and utilities are on a Samsung 860 Pro SATA III 256 gb SSD where the Samsung 970 Pro PCIe NVMe SSD (currently empty) is on a daughter card attached to a PCIe 16 slot. This is because I’m keeping (and upping) my Optane to 32 gb for my WD Black 2Tb.

Another small reason for asking this question is that if it’s viable (in the sake of noticed speed increase) then I have the option of returning the 860 Pro back to Dell and save $100.

But the money’s not important I’d the Win10 speed difference will be negligible. Then I’ll just keep the 860 and leave Windows where it is until I run out of room on the 860 (70 gb free now).
