PC sometimes boots in Dual, sometimes in single channel (RAM)?

So i recently went in to task manager after having some issues with games that require a lot of ram and found that windows was detecting i had 16gb of ram but was only using 8gb.

I downloaded CPU-Z and went to the memory tab and sure enough it said my motherboard and ram were using single channel instead of dual even though i have two 8gb (bought in a 2x set) sticks in opposite slots (both the same colour slots).

After fiddling around and swapping the sticks out to the other coloured paired slots and even putting them in the slots next to each other it randomly started in dual when i put them back in the same slots they were in when i started this mess.

I thought id fixed it by just random luck so i turned off my pc, put the side of the case back on, plugged the fan attached to said side of case and stood the pc up (it was on its side so i could change the sticks.) I started the pc up again and launched CPU-Z to see if it was still dual and its reset itself back to single channel.

Using a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P motherboard with Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz 2x8GB RAM.

Any ideas would be of great help because not going to lie im completely f**king lost at this point haha.

I either think my motherboard is dodgy or something but i dont know enough to tell.

Thanks for any help!
