Hi all,

my spec's:
i7-4790K OC'd to 4.6 @ 1.250v
ASUS Z97 Pro Gamer mobo,
GTX 1080 ftw (EVGA)
RM850i Corsair psu,
Windows 10.

First off I am not great at troubleshooting problems. I have an issues when I am changing BIOS settings. I have set up profiles for overclocking previously and have been using the same profile for about a year. It has my CPU OC'd to 4.6Ghz @ 1.250v, my RAM at 2400Mhz @ 1.600 (XMP settings).

I attempted to reset to default mobo settings and when I went to save and exit the computer shut down, it tried to restart for a split second (with the lights and fan starting to spin) and then power back off and would not turn back on until left it for about a minute.

I am really not sure what is happening. I have checked my RAM with Windows Memory Diagnostic, no problems. I get zero issues when my system is in actual windows. I have reset CMOS no change.

I'm not sure if it is my PSU! I have benchmarked my GPU and CPU together to put as much pressure on the PSU as possible, no problems.

My drives are running good, windows is on an SSD, games on another SSD and a HDD for storage.

So you loaded defaults in the BIOS, but then the system fails to restart?

It should cycle/attempt to post and, once it fails a few times (3-5, I think) then you should successfully post.

Depending on the defaults of the board though, the default settings may well conflict with your OS boot requirements (AHCI, CSM, FastBoot etc), so you may only successfully reach the BIOS on defaults.

Thanks for the reply,

On the EXIT screen I choose the save and exit option. The system immediately turns off, and for a split second attempts to power back on but fails. I then have to wait for the power to leave the board (there are lights that stay on for a short time after I power off) to go out, about a minute. Then i can turn the comp on. It always boots to windows without any issue. It is only when I change a bios setting that this happens.

I am, it's hard to even get into the BIOS now! The MOBO splash screen hangs for a long time if I press "del" or "F2". At times it wont even load the BIOS

Try clearing the CMOS. Should achieve the same thing as loading defaults, but sometimes a physical clear on the board can help.

Not sure if there's a clear CMOS button/jumper on that board..... So the easiest route is to remove the CMOS battery, wait 10mins and put it back in.

Ok Ill try that. I did reset the CMOS earlier with the jumper on the board! I flashed my BIOS with the latest update (which I was already running) but though what the hell. As soon as I clicked ok when told to exit BIOS the comp just died, then attempted to start for a split second and then died again. I can record it and upload to YT if you want to see it happen??

No I didn't kill the power to the machine it just turns of and becomes unresponsive, and I have to switch the power supply off and then wait for the Standby Power LED to go off before I can flip the PSU back on the system starts.

But you can successfully post/boot after that though, right?

Might be worth flashing the BIOS again, as it may not have taken correctly, based on what you've described (assuming you can still boot, of course).

Definitely try clearing the CMOS via removing the battery though.

Unfortunately Bart that didn’t solve the problem! At least it boots and I can use it without issues in windows!

I recently bought a 1080ti and had problems with it, I’ve been told that it is probably faulty and my boot issues started when I put the new card in to use! Looks like that GPU has done something to my mobo that I can’t seem to find answer to. Problem is I can’t buy another board as they are too old.

New CPU, board and ram isn’t the ideal solution :(

Thanks for the help Barty

Ok so changed the CMOS battery and can now edit the BIOS without the comp shutting down! Still having some issues entering the BIOS at times but things have improved!
