Motherboard: Z370-E
HDD: WD10EZEX 1TB
Water Cooler: NZXT Kraken x62

I’ve been working on computers for just over 4 years now. I know how important it is to follow instructions due to screwing up in the past. I admittedly have made mistakes, and it’s totally possible I have again, but I installed as the manual said.

After installing the NZXT Kraken x62 and a new 850 watt PSU, I turned my PC on, I saw through my side panel a spark fly from the right side of the AIO Pump. The Kraken x62 RGB’s lit up for a second and then turned off, I heard an audible pop, and shut everything down. This all was under 30 seconds my CPU shouldn’t of overheated.

Changed to an air cooling system and turned it back on, Now I can’t get pass BIOS and no hard drive is detected in the boot menu.

I’ve inspected all the components and I don’t see any burn marks, nothing in particular smells like smoke.

The Kraken x62 is powered off a SATA cable the same one my HDD was powered with. My guess and hope is, too much power was sent to the water cooler. It fried that and then my HDD. I doubt this but is it possible the new PSU caused this?

RAM is still detected in BIOS, the HDD is not spinning up at all (I’ve placed my hand on top of it as I turned my PC on).

The cable that runs from my HDD to my motherboard has been changed, and I used a different SATA port on my motherboard. There is still no boot options. I have ordered a new HDD, it should be here by Friday. I have RMA’d the Kraken x62.

Is this likely just my HDD? The only way I see my motherboard was damaged, was from the spark, or through the cable from my HDD to my motherboard which I find both unlikely but the latter more unlikely.

What could’ve caused this? Was this my doing or a defective unit? I know I followed the manual and installed everything correctly.

What should my next move be? I have a new Kraken x62 and HDD on their way.

Thanks in advance!

I have had the same exact experience and when I sent to NZXT for RMA, they wanted me to reconnect it and see what will happen And I refused to do so because i am afraid it will short circuit sopmething in my pc and they are refusiing the RMA. how did u get them to take back the cooler and what happned after ?
