Hey. I am going to be installing a new SSD hard drive on my laptop with Windows 8.1. I am wondering how I set it up to boot in bios. I am going to be cloning it and already know how to do that, I just dont know how to set it up to boot in bios so when I turn my computer on, it will boot right. Also is there anything else I need to do to make sure it boots right. Thanks

Solution

After the clone operation, when you power on for the first time and only the SSD connected, go into the BIOS and verify.
That should be all that needs to be done.

To boot from this drive, you must install the OS on this drive.
Or possibly clone from the old drive to the new drive.

What size/make/model is the new SSD?
How much space is currently consumed on your existing drive.

For the clone operation, exactly like this:
Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the 450MB Recovery Partition, here:

Hey. I already know how to clone it, so all is good with that. I need to know when I put the new hard drive in, after that, how to make sure it boots up. What all do I need to do. Thanks

You shouldn't need to do anything.
Connect the drive.
Clone it
Power OFF and disconnect the old drive.
Put the new drive in the same slot as the old drive (if possible.
Boot up

It should boot up.
You might need to go into the BIOS and just verify the boot order.

But the critical part is to allow the system to try to boot up from the new drive by itself. Old drive completely disconnected.

Hey. I know where I need to go in bios to see all the drives, but how would I be able to make sure its set right. Should I look before and see how its set up so I know how it should look? That way I know its set up right. Thanks
