Which M.2 slot should I use on a Z390 Maximus XI Hero, that won't share lanes with my config?

Hi,

I'm about to build today on a Z390 Maximus XI Hero and I'm asking the question because I'm not entirely sure if I'll be sharing any lanes.

I have a 9900K
I'm populating all 6 SATA with HDD's \ SSD's
I'm using one GPU in top PCIe16x slot
I have a 512GB 970 EVO NVMe
I'm using no other PCIe or PCI cards

My thinking is to just use the bottom M.2 for the 970 EVO, as it'd be cooler, and run in PCIe mode.
Running in PCIe mode will it incur any lane sharing?

How about if I add another M.2 in future, so that'd be the above config but with two 970 M.2's?

Thanks

Solution
You are correct, running the Samsung 970 in the lower M.2 slot will provide the best thermals. However, just make sure that the bottom M.2 isn't a Gen 2.0 x4 or a 3.0 x2. Make sure it is the full 3.0 x4.

Both offer PCIEx4 mode (the top includes a SATA option)
I had already checked the manual
M.2_1 (A) the top one, supports PCIe 3.0 x 4 and SATA mode
M.2_2 (B) the lower one, supports PCIe 3.0 x 4

My concern was more with 1) thermals and 2) whether there would be lane sharing I'd incur using one or two M.2's in PCIe mode

Thanks
Consensus, lower it is.

btw, man these things are tinier than they look in pics. Tiny drives, miniscule screws. For some reason I envisioned something maybe half the size of a 2.5" form factor SSD, lol. This is my first NVMe, going from 850 SSD to 970 EVO NVMe
