Why is my internet unreliable?

I currently have spectrum with a netgear nighthawk router and a netgear extender. I run speed tests and will get 60-80 mbps and then 5 minutes later I get 2 mbps. What is happening? I can't even play let alone stream on this garbage excuse for a broadband connection. Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Edit: I already have QoS set up and changed my DNS servers to googles and it helped a bit but not much

As suggested you should try a directly wired connection also I have spectrum (I'm in SD) and I know the nighthawk is not the router that they provide if you still have the original router (which I know isn't as good) hook it back up and test it as well (after the wired test if you has the same issue). I doubt its your actual IPS (but it could be).
