I have a AMD FX-6300 Vishera 6-Core 3.5 with 16g ram and a ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS and would like to know if a new RTX 2080 gpu will work with my current system, I'm definitely going to upgrade eventually but need to know if it will work

It should work, but it would be a very poor purchase unless the CPU upgrade is near. If this is a long-term upgrade, it's likely that the 2080's performance will be found in a less expensive, future GPU, by the time you have a CPU that can take advantage of anything above a 1060 (and even a 1060 pushes it).
