Hello. I wonder if you can be of help:

I am using an HP Elitebook 2760p with apparently no inbuilt support for USB 3.0. When I plug in my 64gb USB 3.0 Memory stick, I get a partmgr.sys error and a BSOD. This is very strange, as the device should be retro-compatible.

STOP: 0x00000023 (0X00000000000E0107, 0xFFFFF880033B72A8, etc...)

its a fat file system bugcheck
you would need to provide the actual memory dump file to be looked at with the windows debugger.

this looks like a old machine, make sure the bios is updated. usb 3 devices should work on a usb 2 if the bios is dated after about april of 2012. it looks like your machine put out a bios update this year.

(apply bios, and firmware updates then apply driver updates and see if you still get problems)

Hello, John, and thank you for your prompt answer.

My machine is up-to-date, apart from the fact that it is still running W7.
It seems that there must be a power surge somewhere. I'll try to reformat the storage device and maybe divide it into smaller partitions as soon as I have access to my desktop. This is really, really strange, my desktop is also running W7, but the 32-bit version, and takes it like a champ.

usb specifications changed over the years, old bios versions may not work correctly with new usb 3 devices.
the bios needs to be newer than april 2012 (in general for usb 2 port)

put the memory dump file from c:\windows\minidump directory on to a cloud server like microsoft onedrive, share the file for public access and post a link.
