I'm trying to setup RAID 1 with two 4TB HDD and using a non RAID SSD as my boot drive but I'm having trouble.
I'm using the ASUS Maximum X Hero motherboard.
I already have windows 10 on my ssd (and was booting to windows before trying to setup RAID) and just installed two 4tb hdd and I went through the motherboard manual and followed the instructions to setup raid 1. I eventually setup it up but now it doesnt boot and going into repair.

Mobo manual instructions for raid...
1. Enter bios
2. Go to Adavmce menu>PCH Storage Configuration, then press enter.
3. Set the SATA mode selection item to [Intel RST Premium w/ Intel Optane System Acceleration (RAID)].
4.Go to boot menu >CSM (Compatibility Support Module)>Launch CSM, then ser the item to [Disable]
5.Save your changes and exit bios, then enter bios again.
6. Go to the advance menu>Intel(r) rapid storage technology menu.

Solution
Your problem is that you installed Windows with the bios set to SATA in AHCI mode, now you have changed it to RAID and the drivers active in Windows are still AHCI -- end result BSOD.

To make that change and not have issues follow the Win8 instructions HERE that also works for Windows 10.

You could also simply use Windows Storage Spaces in mirror mode.
