I’ll be using which ever one for gaming with a 1080 ti, and I won’t be over clocking on it. A big thing for me is the 9600k is a lot cheaper than the 8700

HT gives you 30-40% more performance depending on instruction mixes being pushed through the two threads. Two extra cores give you 50% more raw throughput regardless of instruction mix. Clock-for-clock, you are 10-20% better off with the i5-9xxx and the i7-8700 is effectively obsolete.

InvalidError makes a good point on hyper thread and extra core effiecency but the 9600k still only has 6 cores unlike the 9700k 8 core. I’ve been looking into these two CPUs as well and if you are strictly gaming only the 9600k seems to be a better value as it performs well in gaming. Also of mention the 9600k with be at $249.99 for Black Friday if you can snag one. If you have other intentions like streaming or other tasking that can utilize the hyper threading of the 8700 then it’s a different story.
