Intel or AMD?

Hello there

I was thinking about upgrading from my i5-7500 to either Ryzen 2600 with a asus tuf b450 gaming MB and with hydro h60 watercooling and still keep my 16gb ddr4 2400mhz ram. Or my other choice would be i5-8500 with asus prime z370-p MB and hyper evo 212 cooler and still keep my rams. I do strictly play games like, csgo, tomb raider, pubg, lol, call of duty, battlefield, assasins creed, the witcher and plan to buy the new hitman and red dead 2 games on release. And sometimes I tend to stream my csgo games for fun. Which upgrade should I go for?

Solution
If you can sell your current combo for 250-300$, then it's a no brainier, go for Ryzen 2600x. This is my opinion.

By the way, the Ryzen box cooler is good enough to serve you well until you get a custom one.

Both of the upgrades do not justify the motherboard switch in my point of view. In your case I would rather pick a second hand i7-7700k.

To justify the motherboard switch, I would aim for i7-8700k or Ryzen 2700x, Ryzen CPUs require DDR4-3000 or higher RAM for the best performance though.
Alternatively - save some money and get a Ryzen 3700x when it's released next year.

I was planning to get 3200mhz for the ryzen upgrade in the future. I just stream 2-3 hours 1-2 times a week, nothing serious or anything planned about streaming.

So i should go for a cheaper MB for the upgrades, as i only have a asus b250m-a prime atm? Which mb would you suggest

And then maybe a arctic freezer 33 instead?

No, it's not about getting a cheaper motherboard, I meant that the performance gains in games with GTX 1060 will be marginal, thus it does not justify the investments into a new motherboard and a new CPU.

But if you are eager to upgrade, I would choose the Ryzen system of those two and do the following:

- Select a good quality b450 motherboard.
- Get a Ryzen 5 2600 or 2600x CPU, not the 1600 series.
- Update the motherboard BIOS to the latest version.
- Try to overclock the RAM and see if it works at DDR4-2600 or DDR4-2800. If you are lucky, it could even boot at DDR4-3000. I built a few systems with Ryzen 7 1700 and b350 motherboard, the DDR4-2400 RAM worked as DDR4-2600 and DDR4-2800.
- Upgrade the CPU to a Ryzen 7 3700x when it's released.

So you suggest my specs are good still and viable, and should get a higher upgrade as the 3700x on release rather than a small upgrade like the ryzen 2600x

What is your current motherboard?
It makes no sense to me to upgrade a motherboard so long as the current motherboard will support the higher performing processor that you want.

The games you mentioned tend to be cpu limited and dependent on the single thread performance of the master thread.
Your desire to stream suggests that more than your 4 current threads would be appropriate.

Your 4 thread i5-7500 has a passmark rating of 8024 and a single thread rating of 2144.
The proposed ryzen 2600 has 12 threads and a rating of 13519 which is great for streaming. The single thread rating os 2005 which is sort of a sideways move for gaming.
Your current lga1151 motherboard will support a 8 thread i7-7700K with a rating of 12,042 and a single thread rating of 2583.
As good as the value of ryzen is, it probably can not compete if you also need to buy a am4 motherboard and possibly ram.
ryzen is picky about ram.
Your specific motherboard may allow a 8th/9th gen processor.

I agree with most of what geofelt says, just some adjustments:

Ryzen 5 2600 can be easily overclocked to match or surpass the i5-7500 single threaded performance.

That's not true. Not a single z170/z270 motherboard can support Intel i5/i7 8xxx or 9xxx CPUs. Even thought the socket is physically the same, Intel has blocked the compatibility, and going to any 8th or 9th gen CPU would requite motherboard swap.

My current mobo is the reason i couldnt go for a 8th or 9th gen intel cpu. If I could limit myself to a budget that includes a cooler, cpu and mobo, it would be around 550 dollars. And what i want within the budget is the best performance with my current 1060gtx 6gb gpu and 2400mhz 16gb ddr4 ram

I believe that the best option for you is to get a second hand i7-7700k, but if you are like me, hate to invest into a dead platform and like to play around with overclocking CPU and/or RAM, then the Ryzen 2600 is the way to go.

See this video for the best B450 motherboard - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWGzmbbimPw

Precisely why I asked what the OP 's specific motherboard was.

If it is a z prefix chipset, there is additional performance available with a i7-7700K.
One can buy a i7-7700K on ebay for $200-$300.
Much cheaper than a ryzen processor plus motherboard.

If going for a new gen processor, I think the i7-9700K is going to be the go to processor for gamers.

I could go for upgrade as msi b450 tomahawk, ryzen 2600x and 2x8gb ddr4 3200mhz for around 570dollars. And then selling my old cpu, ram and mobo as bundle and collect around 250-300 dollars to buy a hydro h60 watercooler and save money for a future gpu. This sounds more like the best solution.
