I bought a high end gaming PC, custom made at my local IT store. Back then, I invested in 8GB ram only, which was a stupid decision in hindsight. I am a newbie, all I did was switching graphics cards and ram bars back in the day.

What I recall, you need to consider frequency, DDR type, channel type and socket color when you upgrade or fiddle with an existing setup. Therefore, I am concerned about compatibility.

As is situation: one ram bar, 8GB

Upgrade: two more bars, 8gb each --> Kingston HyperX Fury HX421C14FBK2/16 16GB kit (2 x 8GB) Link

Can I mix an existing bar with such a set without performance issues?

Also, how much RAM do you *really* need for high end gaming in your opinion? 24 GB should be sufficient?
