Hi there,

This week i bought a new RTX 2070 GPU but didn't realize that when playing games my CPU would cause it to bottleneck. When playing some games my CPU is always maxed out at 100%.

I was just wondering if there is anything i can do to stop this happening or if i will just have to upgrade my CPU.

Current specs:

GPU: Gigabyte RTX2070
CPU: i5 6600k
Ram: 16GB (4x4) Corsair vengeance
PSU: corsair cx600m
Motherboard :asus b150m-c

Solution
In my opinion unless you are Overclocking that CPU.. (and even then) yes it is probably bottle necking it at least a little. but maybe someone will weigh in that actually has / had that CPU and a similar GPU.

Though it also depends on what you use for a monitor.. from looking up info online if you are using an 1080P monitor at like 60Hz the CPU would defiantly be an issue.. if you go up to like 144Hz or something like that and maybe even a 2K or 4K type monitor then it may change to the GPU being more of a bottleneck.

so in short yes the CPU in your case being its always maxed out is a bottleneck.. get a faster one or overclock the crap out of it (if you can and have cooling etc.. and really want to) though you would need a different...

so I would just get a new CPU / motherboard if needed.. from the cpu support list for that board the only one faster would be the i7 7700K and its not a lot faster.. so unless you could find one for cheap.. I would not spend the money.. I did search ebay and darn.. I would not upgrade that system.. you are better off saving some money and getting a new i9 or an top end Ryzen cpu (if you don't overclock and want some extra oomph :)

Now if I am wrong please do correct me people :)

The only thing I can think of is....lower your graphics settings ore resolution in the game.

Other than that.....it's time for a new CPU.

You have a quad core cpu, with no hyperthreading. That means it'll run any low thread count game like cs:go, skyrim etc without issue. It also means that cpu heavy games optimized for 8 threads like BF1 or Witcher 3 or gta5 are going to suffer lower fps, and have high cpu usage, upto and including 100%. The only reason you are seeing such high usage is the gpu has the strength to meet any cpu demands, and then some. A move to a i7-7700/k will do 2 things. For low thread games, absolutely nothing, it'll run really no different to the i5 you have. For high thread games, usage will drop to more normal levels and fps will go up a little-lot depending on the game.

Up to you of the price for that i7 or even a move to CoffeeLake i7/mobo or Ryzen is going to be worth the difference.
