I want to game at 1440p, 144hz.

I want to upgrade my pc so I can game at 1440p, 144fps.

My current specs:
650W gold power supply
ASUS z270G mobo
1060 6gb
i5-7600k@4.2GHz (I can comfortably OC to 4.5, maybe a bit higher)
16GB 3000mhz CAS15 RAM

I want to do this as cost efficiently as possible as I'm a highschool senior and this is coming out of the money I make working.

Can I get away with just upgrading the GPU? What would allow me to hit these specs on AAA games (currently playing Black Ops 4; play a lot of Overwatch)? 2070? 1080?
Will I need more RAM?
Will my CPU prevent me from reaching this performance(I dont have to hit 144, I'd be happy getting 120)?

  1. You just need a GPU like the GTX 1070. You will be able to game at 1440p with high quality settings.
    If you want a little more headroom, then get either GTX 1070 Ti or GTX 1080.
    Some might recommend the RTX 1070 over the GTX 1080 because is a little faster but the RTX 1070 is also much more expensive.

    You need will need a reliable PSU.
    What's the brand of that PSU?

    I have the EVGA Supernova G3 550W. I know it's a good brand, but will 550W be enough? Also would a second monitor affect that (because I plan on getting a second 1440p monitor that is an IPS for movies and such?
  3. That PSU is fine for up to a GTX 1080.
    If you use both monitors while gaming it will reduce gaming performance.

    By use does that mean simply having browsers open? or would I have to be streaming something to see a decrease in performance? And is this dip noticeable?

    I have a dual monitor setup and I have setup several of them and just browsing you might see around 3-7 FPS drop since the GPU has to also draw the 2nd monitor.
    I don't notice the small FPS drop on neither GTX 1070 or 1080, since their are powerful enough.
  6. If you can fenagle it, grab a 1070ti. I had been using one on a 34" ultrawide 1440p @100hz, and almost all games were completely playable, with most pushing the 100hz limit on my monitor. With a standard 1440" 144hz monitor, you should be just fine.
  7. Just as a reference, I have an i5-4690 and a GTX 1080. I get more than 60fps on my 1440p monitor, though mine is just a 60Hz one. And that is with most settings cranked up in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

    Your CPU is better and should be fine. Just focus on a solid GPU.

    You must have something wrong there. I literally dont see any difference in performance when running 1 or 2 monitors, if the second monitor is just showing a desktop or web page.

    Obviously if the second screen is showing a video or stream it will hit performance because it will use the GPU to decode.
  9. In my experience you need at minimum a 1080 to take advantage of a 144hz 1440p monitor.

    Depends on the games. I run 1440p 144hz on a 1060.
