Best Solution For AMD FX 8320 Crashing From Overheating?

The problem: My computer crashes constantly. I ran Memtest, no errors. I then installed Core Temp just to see what my CPU is running at, and I found that it was consistently hovering in the mid 70s (for reference, my understanding is that a FX 8320 should start throttling in the 70s and crash at 80).

I built this rig about 6 years ago, but I haven't maintained it as well as I could have, other than the occasional cleaning of the filters and maybe some compressed air here or there. I don't have an aftermarket cooler, and obviously the CPU is pretty old. Considering Black Friday is right around the corner, I thought I'd ask the experts, what should I do? Do I need to buy a new CPU? Pull out and clean everything in the rig? Get an aftermarket cooler? What would you suggest is the best solution?

You don't need to spend that much on a cooler and I wouldn't recommend buying a FX CPU, save up for the AMD Ryzen 2600, B450 motherboard and at least 8gb (2x4gb) of DDR4 @3000mhz.

It's a Corsair Carbide Series 300R, and my budget is around $200 max, although I'd really prefer to keep it under $100. I could go higher if I'm actually replacing the CPU.

Btw, any good guides for how best to clean out the computer? I was never very good at this, and it's been several years since I learned the few things I do know.



Will do! And no, I haven't repasted it, mostly because I've been a little hesitant about damaging something. This could totally be the problem though, as I remember when I first built the rig I didn't get the best application of paste on initially. Any guides on how to reapply paste?
