Hello,
I was wondering if the msi b350m gaming pro is compatible with the Ryzen 7 1700X. I know that it supports 1st gen Ryzen ,but I want confirmation. Would the Ryzen 5 1600 be better suited to fit the motherboard instead? Thanks!

That board is perfectly compatible with all Ryzen processors... including the 1700X. Both a 1600 and 1700X should perform perfectly to published, stock, specifications.

I think, though, what you are asking is which processor is better to overclock on that board. The answer isn't as easy. A 1700X is 8 cores and will draw a lot more current and load the VRM heavier so it heats up and provide unstable voltage, limiting the overclock. But then, it's 8 cores of 3.9Ghz performance (typical) vs 6...

But then, it's 8 cores of 3.9Ghz performance (typical) vs 6 cores at 4.0Ghz (typical); or 33% more cores for the 1700X vs 2.5% greater clock speed for the 1600.

Which is faster depends on use case.

Thank you guys for the responses! I wasn’t planning on overclocking but was rather seeking a confirmation. You guys have successfully answered my question. Thanks!

That's good to see you're not planning on overclocking as that board would be a bit more disappointing than some others, and a bit difficult to get to those 'typical' OC numbers for either processor. Operating at stock speeds, however, it should work just fine.

And I too would like to run an 8 core since with Windows10 now running upwards of 60 services in the background I am a fan of 'more cores' and AMD has made it cheap for us average users to give it 8 cores/16 threads to work with. It may seem wasteful but it does make the experience smoother even when not pushing the processor hard with heavy work loads.
