What are the practical applications of connecting two computers together with an Ethernet cable?

Hi everyone.

I was wondering, what are the practical applications of connecting two computers together with an Ethernet cable? Why might someone want to do this?

For instance, can you transfer data from one computer to another if they're connected with an Ethernet cable?

Or, if one computer has WiFi, but another doesn't, can you connect both computers together with an Ethernet cable and connect the computer that doesn't have WiFi to the Internet that way?

Yes, hooking a computer up to one with a WiFi card allows it to use the WiFi this is called 'tethering'. Also hooking them both up via ethernet would allow for really quick file transfers but you would have to set one up as a FTP server or use a shared folder such as the one that Windows supports (requires a little bit of setup). These days am perplexed when people ask this because home LAN (in-home networking) is so common. People got a Ethernet switch somewhere in the house and just plug your desktop laptop whatever and BAM, you are on the network.

But OK, u don't have an home LAN, the implication is, yes, tie 2 computers via Ethernet they will talk to each other but require some configuration, not hard but no plug&play like paragraph above. Either you are doing Internet Sharing or an ad-hoc network.
