i have 3 x 1tb drives in raid 5 configuration and one of them is failing due to age, is it possible to remove it and set my raid to 2 drives without loss of data?

simple yes or no is what im looking, as i am willing to backup to external media if not possibly.

Solution
Your RAID will always be a 3 drive configuration and will be "degraded" unless you remove, replace the failing drive, and successfully complete a rebuild. Most users lose data during the rebuild. I would recommend a backup of important data prior to starting the rebuild.

Permanently going to 2 drives requires a change in the RAID type. Either RAID 1 or 0. Which requires a full reformat.

Trying to continue as a RAID 5 will show as "degraded".
