[SOLVED] I7-8700k crashing while Intel Turbo boost is active

As long my Intel Tubro boost is disabled, my pc is working perfeclty fine under load at 3,7 gHz. But when enabled (even on default settings of the mainboard) it even freezes from time to time during BIOS. BIOS is up to date. BSOD is sometimes "WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR" or "CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT".

My specs:

CPU: I7-8700k
Board: MSI z370 SLI Plus
RAM: DDR4-3200 (2x 8gb)
GPU: GeForce GTX 970
power supply: be quiet! Pure Power 10 600W

Does anyone have an idea how to fix it?

First of all, what CPU cooler are you using?

Second the first error code looks like a driver issue. Did you do a fresh Windows 10 Pro install when you installed the CPU and Motherboard?

Third, have you loaded optimised defaults in the BIOS as the second error is related to overclocking?

My cpu cooler is the brocken alpenföhn 2. Installed windows 10 a couple of times, never helped. I was resetting the mainboard to default settings a couple of times yeah

I can only think that when turbo boost is enabled your 8700K is getting to hot and maybe you need to look at re-installing the Cooler. The Brocken Alpenfohn 2 is a fairly old design and the 8700K does run fairly hot so it might be related to temperature...though I will admit I might be wrong...Hopefully we have someone on Tom's forum who might have come up against those error codes and give a better answer...

I could do a 5min stress test and it stayed at about 60°, most of the time it is crashing within 10 seconds when I try to benchmark it.

but thanks for your replies anyways!

Just to be clear are you saying he should have enabled XMP because I am assuming that he must be running XMP to get the DDR4 3200 memory running at that speed. Assumptions can always be dangerous....That's on my side mind you..

Its a run of the mill PSU and overpriced based on competition.

The issue with it is it has a 2 rail design, which isn't bad if used properly. If you are using rail 1 to,power your GPU then you are going to have issues as your system will be running off 18 Amps. Doesn't matter how new something is if it's ineffective.

Solution
what is the date of your bios version
what is the date and name off your intel overclock driver.
(2 versions with different names, each version has different dates.)

some systems end up having both versions installed at the same time.
cpu released Q4'17 stock 3.7 to 4.7 GHz

you can download autoruns to see the date and name of the drivers.

I just put together a new build and have been searching for info on this issue. I've already replaced everything in the case except the CPU and my replacement is being delivered tomorrow. I will post back with results.

I've not even been trying to overclock. My fix was setting a manual speed for all cores at 3.7GHz. That prevented the turbo boost from kicking in and the system works fine that way. But a crippled CPU is no way to treat an EVGA 2080 Ti Hybrid GPU...

Update

Replaced 8700k CPU. Reset BIOS to defaults. Booted up and stressed with XTU. No more lockups so far. It's only been about 15 minutes, but I'm pretty confident that it's fixed now. Before I couldn't get past a lockup in BIOS without the CPU being manually set for 3.7GHz.
