Laptop and desktop with same HDD OS

Hi all,
I'm wondering if it is possible to use 1 HDD to run a desktop and a laptop?
Let say I have a Asus P8Z77VLK Desktop is a Intel Z77 chipset, if I find a laptop/notebook with the same chipset would I be able to run the laptop using the desktop's HDD?

thx!

Assuming Windows, not a chance. Windows is not portable like that.

    1. It probably won't boot up in 'the other' system.

    2. The licensing/activation will fail.
