Is a 4 core or 6 core CPU better for gaming?

Alright so the title may sound like a dumb question but I saw some thread/forum thing somewhere that was explaining that a 4 core processor is better for gaming than having, say, 6 or 8. They said something about how gaming performance is increased based on clock speed per individual core and said having more than 4 might actually make performance worse. Can someone confirm this or is this complete crap? I'm currently looking at either the Ryzen 5 1400 (4 cores, 8 threads) or Ryzen 5 1600 (6 cores, 12 threads) and the 1600 is only $10 more. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Solution
The issue is people like to compare entirely different processors, which is not really viable.

In your case, the extra 10 dollars for the extra cores/threads is absolutely worth it, you arent going to get better performance by buying the 1400, no way you look at it.
