As the title says, I need a new motherboard for my computer. I have been having serious fps drops during gaming and after far too many hours reading and testing I found out the issue appears to by the motherboard throttling the voltage due to the mosfets overheating.
I have already tried applying those little heatsinks to them and moving the fans but so far the only solution to stop the throttling is downclocking the cpu.

Can someone recommend a good motherboard to buy that can replace my current M5A78L-M.

BTW I am in UK.

I was looking at that one, turns out there isn't much choice available for am3+ anyway as most places have stopped selling them.

Can someone explain the difference between the Gigabyte 970A-UD3P and the 970A-DS3P?
amazon doesn't do a good job explaining the details on them.

Here is the comparison. https://www.gigabyte.com/Comparison/Result/2?pids=5194,5216

They are almost same, but when you look at the motherboard, you can see the UD3P has 8+2 power phase with the heatsink, the DS3P has only 4+1, also has the heatsink too, which is as same as your old motherboard ( ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3, 4+1 without the heatsink ).

And here is the picture for these power phase counts or the VRMs. In the linker that MB has same 4+1. If you google that MB, you can find that motherboard with lots of problems too. https://www.overclockers.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=132068&stc=1&d=1377270795

For the FX 8 series cpu, you have to get the higher power phase count MB, otherwise you will get the same problem, motherboard throttling, because the fx 8350 has 125W TDP, that will draw more power from the MB power phase.

Are there any other possible motherboards that would work? or does anyone know where i can buy one in the UK?

As after looking online al morning the only place that said they had the "Gigabyte 970A-UD3P" then said they didn't and wanted to sell me an "ASRock 970 Pro3" which seems to have the same 4+1 power phase you mentioned.

Sorry, nothing you can do.
Keep in mind, your fx8350 does bottleneck the gtx1070, then the cpu should run very high percentage, maybe 80-90% during the games.

If they don't have the Gigabyte 970A-UD3P, if you buy the ASRock 970 Pro3, you are fine for few yrs (maybe), after that you will have the same problem.

Or you may add the small fan over the VRMs section. Like in the linker, that will help too. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSOy4C1kR6yBQE3Qo3YpE_ALwKnkeKbSY0peWnHrclOGFpZcOqs

And maybe the time to upgrade whole PC, if you have the budget for new cpu/MB/RAM.
