I just upgraded from an MSI GTX 960 4GB to a Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB OC WINDFORCE and somehow, I'm not getting any better frames than before. As a matter of fact, I think I'm getting WORSE frames than when I had the 960 4GB installed. I installed the latest driver from GeForce Experience and when I went to the games to see what settings I could run them at, they were bad. GeForce Experience was telliing me that my system couldn't handle some games and recommended lower resolutions at lowest settings for most games when this card should be able to run them at 1080p max settings. I thought it was just false info, but when I went in-game, I saw no improvement.

Here are my specs. Idk if anything in my computer has anything to do with it.
CPU: AMD FX-8300 @3.2GHz
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB OC WINDFORCE
PSU: 650w
MB: MSI 760GM-P23(FX) (MS-7641) <- Gotten from CPU-Z, idk if that's entirely right.
RAM: Standard 8GB DDR3 (Idk where to find the speed nor do I know the manufacturer)
HDD: 1TB HDD

Please help, I have no idea what to do at this point.

I should also mention that I didn't touch the settings at all when I changed my gpu. My games were mainly at low-medium settings with the 960 and I didn't change them when I booted with the 1060.

The 960 is essentially a 1050 Ti level card. So you moved up from a 1050 Ti to a 1060 6gb. That is a notable jump in capability assuming the rest of your computer is capable.

Some games leverage the videocard primarily. In these games you should see an increase in performance. Some games, like Battlefield 1 in multiplayer, really stress the CPU and the videocard. In games like this you may see no difference in performance if your FX was already running the game as good as it can with the 960.

Without knowing the games you play it's difficult to say more.

Like others have said, your CPU is pretty old and probably is creating a bottleneck not allowing your new 1060 to perform as well as its capable of, also the DDR3 instead of DDR4 may be limiting in modern titles.

Id recommend new CPU and RAM but that would require a new motherboard as well.

The ryzen 3 or ryzen 5 CPU's are pretty good budget options, then adding 8gb of DDR4 RAM with a new motherboard should help.

This all together could run you about $200-300

Would upgrading to an FX-8350 be fine? I don't want to spend too much money, I can't really do anything that's $300, maybe $200. Thing is, I don't want to spend money on a new motherboard, RAM, and CPU. All that together is gonna cost a lot, and given my situation, I can only do 1 at a time. Two things I'd probably do is upgrade the RAM and CPU, but if I need a new motherboard, then that's gonna cost a lot since newer gen cost about $70+ AND they have different sockets, meaning more expensive newer gen cpus. Although, if there's a way I can get a cheaper motherboard or even keep the motherboard I have already, that'd be great. If not, that's fine. I'll just have to save up.

unfortunately that would only be a small upgrade so it wouldn't improve anything or show any noticeable difference

I have a EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and a AMD FX-6300 Vishera 6-Core 3.5 GHz and I run newer games fine. For example, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands on Very High and it's pretty smooth. Just sharing my experiences.

Yeah unfortunately it would run you around $270 , but with the outdated cpu and ram i don't see any shortcuts around just saving up and making the newer upgrades.

Could you maybe post what your motherboard is? I have that game and I haven't tested it, but I would bet I would get lower fps even though my cpu is better than yours. Though I might be wrong; correct me if I am. I'm wondering if it's really a motherboard issue if yours is higher quality than mine.

I have a GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3P (rev. 2.0) Motherboard. And I'm using 2x4GB DDR3 ram.

I built this computer in mid-2015. To be honest, I'm not sure what the problem is. Like others have said you'll probably want to upgrade the CPU to get better performance. I do want to upgrade mine, too, since mine is old! I know I'll also have to get a new motherboard.

Yea that's what I'm probably gonna have to do. I was expecting the performance to at least be somewhat better with the cpu that I have considering the performance difference between the 960 and 1060 is huge. It seems upgrading to an FX-8350 won't do much either.

I still have this feeling that the FX 8000 series cpus are still decent cause I've seen people with the same cpus and the 1060 do fine with max 1080p.
