Hello!

I recently upgraded my internet rates and I now have 100/20 mb download/upload. When I am connected to my wifi on my laptop I am getting around 50/26 from speedtests and on my desktop computer I am getting around 29/26. I know ethernet is preferable, but it is not an option. I am also within 3 metres of the router if that plays a part.

I have the following wifi adapter: tp-link tl-wn881nd 300mbps pci-e 1x card

I sincerly hope someone can give me some advice, seeing as it causes me much stress.

All replies are much appreciated, thank you!

Distance is of course a factor. 3 meters is not much, but it also depends on what is in between your router and adapter. Especially if what is in between creates any kind of EM interference (cordless phone, microwave, etc).

Equipment is also a factor. Your adapter is rated at 300 Mbps (150 Mbps per antenna). But real word speed is normally half of that. And, if your router only has 1 antenna, then that limits you too. One last thing is about antennas (since your adapter has external ones). The signal from the antenna radiates out in a donut pattern. So, you get the strongest signals when looking at the sides of the antenna and the weakest when looking at the tip of then antenna. Some people think it's good to have the antenna pointing at the target, but this is really the worst setup.

Let us know if any of this helps.
