Gpu vs cpu upgrade

I have an i5 2500 and a gtx 1050 2gb. My friend has the exact same gpu with an i3 8100. He gets about 20 fps more than me on rainbow six. Everyone is telling me that upgrading to a rx 580 would give me more performance than upgrading the cpu. So how come my friend gets more fps if its a gpu bottleneck? Thanks

Solution
The RX 580 will be a quicker win for your gaming right now and then when you are ready the CPU, Motherboard and RAM as that will be a bigger upgrade. In the new year things should start hotting up even more on the CPU front so prices should be cheaper, especially for a Ryzen based platform. The RX 580 can then slot into your new system and will work even better then.

Bottom line, the 1050 is a fairly weak GPU and will stay a fairly weak GPU even if you upgrade your CPU....

I'm saving up still so haven't decided on a budget. I've checked afterburner and I think it is a gpu bottleneck but the numbers seemed glitchy so idk. Canada

The RX580 would give you a much bigger boost over the 1050 for sure and if you are upgrading then a GPU upgrade would give you a better boost. Yes the i5-2500 will probably be a bottleneck but not to a large degree. When you upgrade the CPU next then it will probably be a bigger upgrade to move to a newer platform like Ryzen or 8th Gen Intel and the RX580 will be even better then..

So I should upgrade the GPU first than upgrade to a better cpu if I want too

Ok thank you very much

Dude, you are confusing OP.

@OP, no, cpu upgrade is very likely the best choice.

I am not confusing the OP, just giving my advice and in this situation with a GTX 1050 which, lets be honest is a fairly weak budget card and more importantly will stay a fairly week budget card even with a CPU upgrade, the RX 580 upgrade is a valid choice and will most definitely improve gaming no end compared to the current setup with a 1050...

Yes a new CPU upgrade will of course help, but that won't change the fact that he is still using the GTX 1050 which is the weaker link in the whole setup...When he next upgrades, the better upgrade would be a whole platform upgrade which would include CPU, RAM and Motherboard at the very least...So save up and do that properly...

Again, just my thoughts and advice...and most importantly the OP is welcome to your and anybody's advice as well..

Explain why then? "I have an i5 2500 and a gtx 1050 2gb. My friend has the exact same gpu with an i3 8100. He gets about 20 fps more than me on rainbow six. " it looks to me OP wants to get same FPS in Rainbow 6

Chiefs I'm not confused. I'm just confirming what I already know. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. Thank you for all of the help you people have given me. And remember I'm not playing the latest games anyways. I might get cyberpunk 2077 when it comes out but that's about it

Nothing to explain as the RX580 will provide much better frames then what your friend is getting with an 8100 and 1050 combination....There are so many threads on this very subject matching a 2500 with an RX 580 and no issues whatsoever...the point being for the OP, what to spend on right now...better GPU or better CPU...CPU route means RAM, Motherboard and CPU upgrade and yet he will still be stuck with a 1050...

That's what I thought. I was just skeptical because of how my friend gets more fps than me and that didn't make sense to me.

It's like a win win for you. Win number 1, the RX 580 will give you an immediate FPS boost over your current GTX 1050. Win number 2, when you next upgrade to a new platform with CPU, Motherboard and RAM, you get an even better FPS boost as the new CPU will drive the RX 580 even more....
