[SOLVED] i7 8086k or i7 9700k for gaming

Hi, so the title is pretty straightforward. I will be getting new CPU and cant decide between the mentioned CPUs since there is only 10 euro difference. ( The reason why i dont consider 8700k is because its only 20 euro cheaper than 8086k, also not considering i9 9900k since thats over 140 euro more expensive than 9700k. The pc will be used mainly for gaming, and in benchmarks i see mostly no difference between them.

I am litlle bit more in favor of 8086k since it has higher OC potentional, good temperatures, hyper threading(HT), and since it is limited edition = better resellability.

But since the 9700k is 9th gen it makes me wonder if its not better futureproof, bacause thats what i am after, dont want to buy new CPU for at least 4-5 years again. The biggest issue i have with 9700k is that it doesnt have HT. But i did some reasearch and found out that most games run with higher fps when HT is disabled so this puzzeles me.

Is it better to have 6 cores and 12 threads or 8 cores and 8 threads? Sure, it depends on the games, and right know most games dont even use 6 cores, but as i said i want to futureproof my self.

Eh, there's more than the game going on. Any CPU will have some usage on all cores and threads. The important part is if there is a performance loss by having less cores or threads. The 9700k beats the 8700k and 8086k in gaming.

As a happy 8700K user, I would still say if this was a gaming only build then the 8 proper cores over the 6 proper cores would just be better overall for gaming even with the extra threads that the 8700K has. So the 9700K is my vote...

yeah well, thats why i am asking here so i dont have to "toss up". those cpus are not cheap so i dont want mess up...

I saw the benchmarks and yes the performance is very close, lot of times only 2-3 fps difference. Also i am assuming that those benched CPUs run on stock speeds, I will be cooling my CPU with NZXT Kraken 62 (240mm) so there will be some OC done.

Right know i would buy 8086k since it has all those features i listed and can be OCed to perform better than the 9700k, what makes me question my choice is the futureproof aspect. The trend is that games start to use more and more cores, games like Assassins creed Odyssey can stress out the 8700k to 100% usage sometimes. I dont want to buy CPU with 6 cores and find out in two years that its starting to be a bottleneck because new games use more cores. 4 years ago i bought i7 4790k thinking that it will last for 8 years for games atleast, well i was wrong, and now i am capped with 48 fps in assassins creed odyssey cities cpu usage on 100% and gpu sitting on 60%. I would really like to avoid this this time...

I am guessing that it hits those 5.3 ghz delided and custom water cooled, i am not planning to delid or have the custom cooling. Anyways i saw benchmarks that claim that both 9900k and 9700k have terrible cooling problem, running hot already on stock speeds... So not sure if thats entirely true

Also some 8086k are already being sold on 5.3 clock and factory delided but those cost even more than 9900k, so i dont think that there should be problem to get that OC on standard 8086k which runs 5.0ghz out of the box

Whats bothering me is if the right choice is 6 cores and 12 threads or 8c/8t for the future gaming

Well good to know, still those gaming benchmarks in it didnt really impress me,9700k was ahead of 8700k by 1fps most times and in some games 8700k was even better, makes me wonder why. Makes sense that 9700k performs better since it runs on higher clock speed out of box but I am really disappointed in the overall performance...

Also the rumour about next gen consoles having 8c/16t CPUs makes me wonder if I shouldnt do the same for PC, since games are primary made for consoles these days and then are ported to pc. I mean if developers will make games for systems with 8c/16t than it could put pc users with lesser cores and threads to disadventage.

yeah i saw that one, doesnt really say much new information, other than that his 9700k performs worse in games than 8700k which i kinda find hard to belive when all other reviews showed better performance...

Yep, I too am surprised at that. I have a 8700K which after much procrastinating I delidded and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be...5GHz no problems and currently running a 24/7 overclock at 1.278v....Dropped 18 degrees C with Liquid Metal and boy is it one hell of a powerful CPU...My plan is in a couple of years when the 9900K is no longer at the absurd price or grab one second hand to upgrade then..

well i dont know if the 9900k is even worth it for a gaming only when it runs so hot, HT is nice but not really good when it cant push past 5ghz without seting it self on fire. I am really hopefull that in 5 years amd will finally catch up with intel when it comes to single core performance so we dont have to tolerate 2 times higher price tag on intel cpus...

I am fairly confident with Ryzen 3 coming out early next year at 7nm, they will have caught up or be very close...though still short in the MHZ department but IPC should have improved to make the difference...but the second half of next year and on Intel's 10nm will hit....Bottom line you can't really make a bad choice on CPU's as there is something for everyone at all price points now...

Why is everyone freaking out saying the 9900k runs so hot? It doesn't. I have mine on an aio albeit but it doesn't even go over 50C playing bf v. Stress tests reach or stay below 70c. And if it's just for gaming you don't even need to OC it, it's already a beast.

If you're only gaming, go with the 9700k. Just don't plan on doing heavy streaming.

I mean I'm sure you can find a more official benchmark source then my just saying it but it seems to be a pretty big misconception. Perhaps if you oc all cores to 5+ ghz then it gets toasty, but that's kind of expected ocing 8 cores over 6. I only consider something toasty if it gets near my 7800x temps and so far not even close.

Stock speeds though? Throw a decent air cooler on it and you're golden.

The fact that you actually have one is key and you know doubt have been running it and testing the heat output...At 5GHz + pretty much all CPU's have a heat issue so more than expected on the 9900K, and as you pointed out even at stock it is a powerhouse...
