As the title says. Is it possible to OC the 1700x on the MSI B450 gaming pro carbon ac to 4.0 GHz on all cores. I know the X370 is what people recommend but I wanna know of the power delivery will be good to OC the 1700x.

Like norcalsc said, it will depend a lot more on 'silicon lottery'. That is: whether your CPU is up to it. Point being 4.0G is not assured for a 1700X so be ready for not getting more then 3.9G, which is the most commonly attained, or points in between.

It also depends on what you consider 'stable'. Some people are content with booting and stable in games, maybe 15 or 20 seconds of Prime95 small FFT. That does work OK if they never push all 8 cores any harder than that in daily useage. But if you're like...

It also depends on what you consider 'stable'. Some people are content with booting and stable in games, maybe 15 or 20 seconds of Prime95 small FFT. That does work OK if they never push all 8 cores any harder than that in daily useage. But if you're like me you want at least an hour of Prime95, and I can't get more than 3.9G on my 1700 for that kind of stable.

Also about X370 and X470 boards: it's not the chipset that makes them 'better' for overclocking. It's that mfr's put better VRM sections only on those boards to enhance their 'premium' status, but even then only on the very high-end boards. That means many, if not most, of the mid and lower end X370/470 boards have VRM's no better than the better B450 boards which the Pro Carbon definitely is. And yet they will still be limited by the Silicon Lottery: probably no better than 4.0G, 3.9 if you want an hour or more of Prime95 with a relatively normal cooling strategy.
