so I hope this is the best place to ask this question..

My old 120GB kingston was near capacity hence new 500GB SSD.

I used samsung software to migrate (clone) from old to new with no errors.

I did this via a USB SATA cable.

replaced drive with new one and windows fired up perfect.

I tried to copy a file to the new drive and I get error:

"A required privilege is not held by the client. " now if it is a 100% clone, why this issue?

I checked error online and found a few suggestions which have not worked. after about 10 min windows crashes... so I have put old drive back in and all good.

The drive was not brand new so I am stuck now not knowing if drive is bad or i have done something wrong?

windows 8.1 64bit

Using Macrium:

(if the below fails, you have hardware issues)
(And the Free Macrium is not a 30 day trial, but actually 'free')

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to...

So add the new drive to my computer using internal cables.. and then run Samsung software again?

I have also tried 2 different USB sata cables.. with same issues.. this really bugs me as it should be very straight forward I presume I am not reinventing the wheel..

This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.

I want to thank you all for helping me and your time. Much appreciated. BUT i have failed and given up.
Drive going back to supplier. I connected the drive via internal SATA and power and ran samsung copy and also Macrium. It all fired up ok as it has done in the past but then after a few minutes it all hangs/crashes...

What I dont understand is that when using the Samsung there is a message saying any files in use will not get copied. But if I am running windows and windows is on the drive I am copying, how does that work??

what a waste of a day! swapping drives over and over again.. back to square one..

I know with Macrium, it makes a Snapshot of the entire drive, and then does its clone thing.

I thought it was magic as well. But it works.
Obviously, you don't want to do this in the middle of a game or movie, though.

just wanted to give you an update to tie up loose ends..

sent old drive back and purchased brand new one for £80 from scan.. they are brilliant service BTW.

Followed USAFRet instructions using reflect 7.2 - swapped drives and all working fine so far..

So I guess that original drive was faulty...

thanks again for all your help
