PC Unable to Boot Windows

Hi everybody,

my computer seems to be unable to boot Windows from any drive connected to a SATA port. It had been functioning smoothly since its purchase in June 2013 until it froze while working yesterday. After failing to boot on the first few restart attempts, Windows eventually started up and seemed to work normally, but crashed to the blue screen of death ("Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart") after a short while. I have been unable to boot the PC since. The Windows booting screen claimed that drive D: (which is not the one containing the OS) was being scanned and repaired at first, but it couldn't progress beyond a certain point. I made sure that the PC was set to boot from drive C: in the BIOS settings and was subsequently met with a black screen with the message: "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". I initially suspected a SSD failure and tried to boot from a Windows 7 DVD next. However, I was greeted by the same black screen instructing me to select proper boot device -- and it's certainly not an issue with BIOS settings, as I made sure the DVD drive was the first booting choice and even tried disconnecting the other drives. After that, I managed to make a bootable Windows 10 USB stick on another computer, and my PC actually did boot from it! Unfortunately, when trying to run Start-up Repair, I got the message that it couldn't repair my PC, without an explanation why.

I've connected the SSD to a laptop with a SATA to USB adapter and all the data on it seems to be fine, so I suppose the disk didn't malfunction. That's why I haven't tried formatting the SSD and reinstalling Windows, should I try it? I've also tried booting from the SSD through the SATA to USB adapter, getting the same black screen.

Does the PC's inability to boot from either the SSD or the DVD drive point to a problem with the motherboard? I've tried switching ports and changing SATA cables, to no result.

The motherboard is an Asus Maximus V Gene, the BIOS version is 1604 x64, the OS is Windows 10 and the SSD containing its installation is a Kingston Now v300. My CPU is an Intel Core i5-3570K @ 3.40 GHz, the PSU is a Hipro HPD630W-90Plus and there are 8 GB of RAM.

Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thank you!

Unfortunately, I can't borrow one, but if there's a strong suspicion the PSU is at fault, I could buy a new one.
