Will my motherboard boot a NVME M.2 SSD from a PCIE adapter card?

I'm not a 100% certain, but the oldest PC I've actually seen successfully do this is a Z170.

The general consensus seems to be "No", not NVMe but you may be able to get a SATA SSD to boot.
