just installed a new 500gb SSD, I booted into the bios, and i my BIOS has a layout of my mobo, and whats attatched to it. In the bios, it sees that I have a new SSD installed, but when I'm actually on windows and I want to like partition it or anything, nothing shows up. Doesn't even recognize it. I thought maybe it was defective, but my bios sees it, why not windows?

Keep in mind, i've never upgraded anything like an SSD or Hard Drive. May sound like an idiot. If you say something like "Did you format it?" explain to me what I need to do TO format it, so I can do it and see if it works. Thank you!

Where have you gone to look for it? It's normal that it won't show up in File Explorer until it's formatted, now to see if Windows is seeing it, let's go a few places.

- Device manager. If this is Windows 10, put your mouse pointer over the flag symbol in the lower left corner and RIGHT click, then select device manager from the menu. Look under "disk drives."

- If it's there, move on to Disk Manager. Go back to the same right-click menu and select disk management. You may immediately get a pop-up asking to initialize a new disk. If not, look for a 500GB disk labeled "unallocated," then right-click and "create new simple volume." Follow the wizard to format the drive. If the drive isn't seen in device manager, report it back here.

nothing seems to be different.

Does the drive work if you switch it to a different SATA port? Also, reset the BIOS by shutting it down, unplugging the power cord and removing the cmos battery. This will be a little coin cell battery somewhere on the board, and should pop out when you press a retention clip holding it in. Leave that out for a couple of minutes then put it back in and power on.

This reset will also reset the time and date, so make sure those are corrected once you are back in Windows.

After downloading some drivers for my SSD, it said that the drivers would not work with my OS. I was running windows 8.1, but now I am using windows 10. After upgrading to windows 10, my computer detected the new ssd, I formatted it, used samsungs data migration, and now my PC boots off my SSD.
