[SOLVED] System build: i7 6700k or Ryzen 5 2300G

Looking for some very (!) basic advice please. I’m helping my stepson build a PC and he/we had initially specced a Ryzen 5 2400G on an Aorus X470 Gaming 5 mobo. My father has just announced that he has an old i7 6700K on an Asus Z170i Pro-Gaming motherboard that we can have if we want.

If we took the i7 and built a system around it it would be with, I think, a Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB.

My noob question is then which would be the better path to take? The system will be for gaming and the i7 CPU would have a decent cooler on it. Are we better off sticking with the newer Ryzen or would the older i7 with newer 1060 card be a better bet?

Thanks in advance!

Are you proposing using the integrated graphics of the R5 2400G *OR* a 1060?
Absolute no-brainer in that case, i7 + 1060, hands down.

If you're considering the 2400G + 1060 vs 6700K + 1060, it's a little tougher.
Can't really go wrong either way..... but I'd probably lean to the 6700K myself (assuming it's cheaper or free).

The 2400G would get you on a platform supported through 2020 (AM4).... whereas the Z170 is going to be limited to a slight upgrade the a 7700K maximum.

Thanks for all the replies folks and it’s confirmed my thoughts (been about 10 years since I last built a PC!) - and yes the i7 is free.

Barty - I was going to use the integrated graphics on the Ryzen. The money I don’t spend on a Ryzen + mobo would go into the 1060 card with the i7
