So I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU one of these days. Problem is: my motherboard is kind of old and I don't know if it's even worth it to get a new CPU or to just get a whole new motherboard too in the process since I don't think there are that many good / better money-worthy CPU's for my motherboard on the market anymore.
Right now I got the MSI H97 Gaming 3 as well as the Intel Core i5-4690. I know that the Intel Core i7 4790K is supposed to be better for my socket but as I said, I don't feel like it's worth the little bit of power boost for the money.
Any suggestions? (budget would be around 500€ for both)

Solution

Solution
Little more expensive. Change out a higher end motherboard for a lower end, but top CPU instead.

Unfortunately, in addition to a cpu and motherboard upgrade, you will need ddr4 ram on any modern setup.
What is the main use for your pc?

If your main use is for multithreaded batch apps, then the ryzen processors listed above are very good.

If your use is for gaming, I think you would do better with a 6 core i5-9600K that can oc to 5.0
You will want a z97 based motherboard and likely a 2 x 8gb ddr4 ram kit.

The K does not come with a cooler.
What your options are will depend on your case.

I think you can come reasonably close with your 500€ budget.
