I got a refurbished HP Z420 workstation with a E5-1603. I want to upgrade it to an E5-1620 v2. Will it take a v2 (Ivy Bridge) or does it need to be the older Sandy Bridge version?

model: LJ449AV
BIOS: HP J61 v3.94 7/10/18
SM BIOS: 2.7

Solution
Ivy Bridge isn't on the CPU support list for that workstation. I had the same issue with my 410 workstation. HP never updated the micro-code for the newer processors.

If you don't get a solid answer here, hop over to the HP forum and ask. That's where I was told mine was a no-go. I tried it anyway with a i5-3570 I picked up cheap. Didn't work, even with the latest BIOS update.
