Afternoon, All,

On a Gigabyte MB, will there be a successful post and boot if no PWM fan is plugged into the SYS_Fan connector?

I am planning a watercooled system using a 200mm x 200mm radiator. The 200 mm fan I would like to use is not PWM. Thus no fan to plug into SYS_FAN.

Any ideas out there?

TIA,

Larry

Should be fine. There is no requirement for system fan headers to be populated with PWM or standard DC12V fans. Even the CPU fan header can be set to ignore and not connected on certain boards. That said, more details of your build plans could be helpful.

I am planning on:

Case: Thermaltake V1
CPU: I7-4790k
GPU: GTX 1070 Mini with full coverage Byksky heat sink.
MB: GA-Z97N-WiFi
Ram: 16 GB of whatever is called for by Gigabyte
OS and Programs: dual 256 GB Samsung SSDs in Raid 1, Win10
Storage 1TB Samsung SSD
External access hot swap HDD storage: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00834SJ8K/?coliid=I1PU1ID2THRDDA&colid=PEW6L6QSGHI0&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
PS: Corsair 750x
Depending on calculations:
Radiator: Phobia 200mm x 200mm
: Pump and Heatsink: Swifttech Apogee Drive II http://site.swiftech.com/apogee/#drive2

Although this is a long obsolete platform, the bulk of this hardware is coming from my personal salvage collection or from swaps with a neighbor who is even more clueless than I am.

Let me know if I missed any build details you would like.

TIA,
Larry

After running the calculations with a hopeful result (and maybe anyway....), I plan on a single loop. And yes an overclock or I would not have obtained the unlocked version of the i7-4790K. If that single radiator is insufficient, I will go back to a stock clock and try again: there is just no more room for additional radiator area.

OK, I believe you since I know nothing to form a valid opinion on the subject. But riddle me this: a 200 x 200 radiator is about the same area as a 120mm x 330mm radiator. What kind of length of 120mm radiator is likely to be sufficient for my needs in YOUR opinion (If I use your estimate and it proves not to work I PROMISE not to crucify you here on this board!)

Thanks so very much for your assistance!

Larry

I may have misunderstood about the actual radiator size. Can you provide a link to the actual model you are purchasing? If the dimensions with regards to total mm area are what you are suggestion, temps could be considerably better than my initial thoughts. With common radiator size suggestions, the 120mm per device being cooled is generally BS if you are looking at getting low temps and low noise, which is the point besides looks to watercool PCs. On a side note, glad to try and help.

Here is a link to the Amazon description: https://www.amazon.com/Phobya-Xtreme-Copper-Radiator-Single/dp/B00LLR08J4/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1543888396&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=phobya+radiator&psc=1. The 200mm x 200mm size is really what lead me to the Thermaltake V1 since it has a 200 mm fan as its input.

Please continue to bear with me as I am wholly ignorant of what I am attempting to do. (Seems so odd to feel like a novice when I almost certainly have more microcomputer experience than anyone on the forum: I built an Altair 8000 many, many years ago....I named it Ol Sparky after all the shorts on that damned S100 bus!)

Very Warm Regards,

Larry

Thanks for the update. I see what you mean. Being that size, it should be sufficient to achieve reasonable temps. A 200mm fan in push configuration I'm guessing. The Altair is before my time, lol. I do work with circuit boards for a living though. Sounds like an interesting story.

Ah, now you have done it! You always run a risk when you give a geezer an opportunity to tell a story. It won't be today, but watch your PM's tomorrow and I will begin to tell you more than you probably want to hear from me! I am pretty sure moving to PMs is the thing to do since there is no need to inflict my garrulous nature on anyone else keeping track of this rather wandering thread!
