Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 external Hard Drive makes my Dell Inspiron 530 desktop freeze on start up. I have Windows 7 Pro installed on it. It will not even start up in Safe Mode. The same drive and cable work fine if I plug it in after boot up. I tried every USB 2.0 port on the machine. It also works well on boot up when plugged into an old laptop that has Windows 8.1 installed on that. Any suggestions?

I had same issue with an old desktop PC -- didn't matter what brand of drive it was (Toshiba, WD, Hitachi & Seagate externals) I just had to live with it and make sure externals were unplugged before booting up. Legacy BIOS was probably to blame --- I removed "USB" from boot sequence but it made no difference, might work for you but I doubt it.

It's no biggie, just don't plug it in till Windows is up and running.
